Sony announced the new 80GB PS3 Core with the new low $399 price at the E3 2008. The 40GB PS3 replacement console was not due until September.
Now reports appear that some retailers already offer the 80GB PS3 for $399.
I guess Sony does not care about an earlier release as the will be just filling the channel and replace the 40GB PS3 as needed.
If you rely on backward compatibility you should get the 80GB PS3 MSG4 bundle. That 80GB PS3 is still featuring the more expensive hardware.
